The story of the rarest Wisden almanack

The Wisden almanack of 1916 was merely of 299 pages as opposed to the previous edition that ran up to 791 pages. It had the obituaries of two of the greatest names – W.G Grace and Victor Trumper. Till today, it remains the rarest of all the almanacks partly due to its massive purchase by non regular Wisden readers. However, that had got nothing to do with the obituaries of the two legends.

The 'Great War' from 1914 meant a halt to cricket in England. And also led to a lot of First Class cricketers serving their armies and perishing on the battlefield.

The non-regular purchasers of the 1916 edition of the almanack were the friends and families of all those who perished, who collected these almanacks as some sort of last souvenirs of those who left.

Here, some of those who served in the battlefield are seen enjoying a game of cricket.
