If you find this photo from the 1996 World Cup interesting, there is something in the photograph that has an even more interesting story.
If 1992 World Cup brought colored clothing to ODI cricket, which were an instant hit, ICC tightened screws in the 1996 World Cup. They asked teams to wear caps or hats of the same color.
One eccentric character, however, had an objection. Jack Russell had worn the same 'flowerpot' hat all his career barring his FC debut. He had continuously repaired it over the years, once even putting it in an oven to dry it. And, of course, it caught fire which didn't mean it being discarded. Instead, some more repairs.
So, when ICC asked the English team to wear blue caps or hat, Russell protested. He went ahead to threaten the board to not play the World Cup. YES, A WORLD CUP FOR A HAT. Eventually, the powers of the day relented when Russell agreed to emblazon the three lions on his hat. As a result, while the rest of the team played wearing blue caps or hat, Russell wore his white hat throughout England's 1996 World Cup campaign. So, why the stubbornness? "It was very comfortable. It helped my head position,” the English wicket-keeper later revealed in an interview.
Life Lesson to be learnt - If you love something, love it like Russell loved his 'flower-pot' hat.
