He might have instilled fear in the hearts of batsmen all around the world with his bowling but Curtly Ambrose was a quiet man on the field and hardly chirped at the batsmen like his ilk.

But things did get heated up once. In the summer of 1995. The aggressor was an Australian. An Australian to the core. Ambrose was told by his fellow pacer Kenny Benjamin that Waugh had sworn at him. Disturbed at the disrespect, Ambrose went up to the batsman and asked him if he had been sworn at. Any other man probably would have let it go but not Waugh. His reply was ‘I can say what I want to say’. A simple yes might not have fired him up but those seven words laced with arrogance and said to Ambrose in front of the Trinidad crowd rattled the big man.

In his aptly titled Autobiography 'Time To Talk' , Ambrose writes, “I got seriously heated. I told him, ‘Man, I will knock you out – here and now. I don’t care if I have no career left’. Waugh, being Waugh, didn't bat an eyelid and stood his ground with a look of valour that belied his size.

Skipper Richardson intervened to douse the fire, resulting in this iconic photo. Waugh and Australia's fire burned on, though, and they became the first team to defeat West Indies in a Test series in 15 years.

Who knows what would have happened had it not been for Richardson's intervention!
