An English cricketer doesn't often get much beyond the usual list of expletives from the Australian crowd. Ask Stuart Broad. What more even Justin Langer copped abuses when playing in the state games. English all-rounder Ronnie Irani, however, somehow managed to strike a chord in 2002 with them.
In Sydney, they started stretching with him when England were seeing the match slip away with Australia requiring a handful of runs to win the match.
Things went up a notch higher in Melbourne Cricket Ground, when he stopped a regulation ground ball at third man and threw it back to the wicket-keeper, he was given a standing ovation. He paid them back by not only doing the traditional stretching routine but star jumps, moon walks and a forward roll as well.
There was a context to the MCG behavior though. The Australian board had threatened before the beginning of the summer that matches would be taken away from the ground if there was no improvement in behavior of the crowd. This had come after the ICC had said it was one of the worst three grounds in terms of crowd behavior.
All while Australia did their routine bashing of England. They failed to secure a single win against Australia in the tri-series.
