At the height of the Chappell-Ganguly spat, India played South Africa at the Eden Gardens. But without Sourav, who was toiling away in Pune for Bengal in Ranji Trophy.
Large crowds came to Edens on the day of the match but with no intention to support Rahul Dravid's men. In fact, a Ganguly-less Indian team was made to feel unwelcome in as many ways as they could. Every Indian wicket was cheered by the crowd as South Africa skittled them out for 188 and when the Proteas came out to bat, the stadium celebrated every run they scored to help them register an emphatic 10-wicket win.
What more, even the stadium authorities got into the act. In the break after India's batting disaster, the giant screen showed an update of Sourav's 159 in Bengal's 378 against Maharashtra in the Ranji fixture. This was after he had taken 5 wickets in the first innings. That was enough to send the crowd into a frenzy for a while post which they got back to making life difficult for the Indian cricketers on the field.
Later, talking about the match, Mark Boucher said, ""The support that we got at Eden Gardens in unbelievable. We do understand that it's because of the whole Sourav Ganguly issue. A couple of our players are wondering why he isn't in the side and it's a bit strange to us. We preferred bowling to the new batsmen than bowling to Ganguly."
