They say that what happens to us when we are young often becomes the basis of how we treat younger people when we grow older. Sourav Ganguly played an ODI against West Indies in 1992. He got a terrible LBW decision early in his innings and then was forgotten for four years.
In an interview ahead of India's 2000 home series against South Africa, which was Ganguly's first after being appointed India captain, this is what he said about backing youngsters.
"I have gone through it and I don’t want any cricketer to go through it; because I think after the last Test match I wouldn’t have scored runs. I wouldn’t have played for India ever. Four years later I am leading the side. That should be the yardstick for everybody. I would give him five games."
"When you pick a player, give him five Tests, five one-dayers before you close the chapter. Don’t pick him for one game, then drop him for two series, and then he is getting back for one game. Again he doesn’t perform you drop him. That’s not fair and that doesn’t help, and it never helps him to get the best."
Who knows if India would have gotten to see the best of Viru, Yuvi, Bhajji and Zak or not had it not been for the treatment meted out to a 20-year-old Ganguly in 1992.
