He might have worn the Pakistan colors after the 1996 World Cup match against the hosts but a mention of Pakistan might still possibly rankle the former English skipper Michael Atherton.

And it's all because of one Asghar Ali.

At the post-match press conference after his team's defeat to South Africa in the World Cup, journalist Asghar Ali had a question in his broken English for Mr. Atherton which, after multiple efforts, the English captain couldn't understand. A frustrated Atheron, who had also notched a duck in the match, ended up muttering "Can someone get this buffoon out of here?" Sadly, for him, the mic wasn't turned off.

The matter should have ended there but Asghar Ali had other ideas. The journalist went on to sue Atherton and the board for 12 million Pakistan rupees in damages as the remark 'ruined his life' according to him. "My personal life, my professional life and my financial life have been affected," Ali claimed later.

Apparently, it even resulted in the cancellation of his wedding, as his the woman he planned to marry "did not want to be the wife of a buffoon."

When Atherton visited Pakistan in 2000 for a Test series, Ali made sure he wasn't off the opener's mind. In fact, Atherton was to appear in the court on the same day the Third Test was to begin.

According to his blog, Ali is also believed to have written a book on the incident"Buffoon: Me or you?"

A clear case of 'That Escalated Quickly'.
