Anyone who has followed cricket a fair bit would know about this particular moment in cricketing history. After all, for 20 years before the World Cup Final this year, this was arguably the greatest ODI of all time, one that ended in a tie and resulted in South Africa crashing out of the World Cup on net run rate. At the center of the drama was no. 11 Allan Donald who had failed to hear Lance Klusener's call for a single in the final over which eventually cost the Proteas a shot at the World Cup.
Cricket is beautiful for moments like these. But cricket is even more beautiful for what followed.
Donald, who was distraught at the realization of what had happened and had headed straight to the physio's room to avoid the disappointment in the eyes of his teammates was paid a surprise visit by two gentlemen.
Not the blokes one would like to go up against in the centre, Steve Waugh and Glenn McGrath showed what champions are made of that day when they went up to Donald to talk to him after the defeat. Realising how easy it must be for the fast bowler to place all the blame on himself for what had just transpired, they told him that it wasn't his job to win the match with the bat in the first place. He had already taken 4 wickets in the match and done his job by restricting Australia to 213.
To think of it, not everyone can put the delirious celebrations to halt, especially after a win so dramatic as the Edgbaston one, to eke out a moment of empathy and kindness for the vanquished. It was only fitting that a few days later Waugh's men were the ones holding the World Cup trophy aloft at the Lord's balcony. True champions.
