A lot of people paid tribute to Phil Hughes post his unfortunate death five years ago in their own ways. One of the most moving of those tributes was the one paid to him by his dear friend Matthew Wade.
Almost a year after his death, Wade revealed an image of Hughes tattooed on his right forearm. Apart from the left-hander's image, it also consists of the Sydney Cricket Ground clock face, the scene of where Hughes was struck on the neck. The clock can be seen to read 4:08, the Test number awarded to Hughes when he made his debut in February 2009.
When the journalists asked him about it post his team's successful campaign in the 2015 Sheffield Shield, Wade had something deeply philosophical to say which showed that Hughes' passing away had left him a wiser man.
He said, "It's a nice reminder when you get a first-baller in a Shield final in the first innings ... that life's too short to worry about little things like that and to just enjoy every moment we have."
The realization of mortality is humbling for most of us. It makes you step back and pay attention to a lot that you'd hitherto taken for granted. A close friend of Hughes, Wade surely took a hit from the loss but, as his recent comeback to the Australian side shows, he has emerged as a stronger character.
