2000 was a difficult year for cricket. The match-fixing revelations sent shock waves across the world of cricket. South African cricket suffered in a major way. Apart from their skipper, Hansie Cronje, another immensely talented individual who was at the center of the storm was Herschelle Gibbs.
The right hander's confession in front of the King Commission meant that he was sent away from cricket from only for six months. On his return, Gibbs, who started with the number 28 before moving to 2, sported 00 on his jersey, which was seen by many as symbolic of a new beginning.
In 2004, he moved ahead. 00 changed to 04. But 04 wasn't here to stay. In fact, his father Herman Gibbs announced that "from now on, he'll go one number up every year. So, next year, it will be 05.
And that's how it went. Gibbs wore 06 in 2006. His jersey number when he became the first man to hit six sixes in an over in an ODI was 07. Next year, he wore 08. And finally, in 2009, he played wearing a number 09 jersey.
When he turned out for Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League and Perth Scorchers in the Big Bash League, he wore 74. No. He hadn't teleported himself to 2074 but decided to wear the number as a nod to his year of birth - 1974.
A colorful character in many ways!
