On January 31 2003, Pakistan Cricket Board made a press release. Ahead of the World Cup, they had a big announcement to make. The news was Inzamam-ul-Haq, who weighed 103.5 till six months ago, had shed 23 pounds to excel in the World Cup.
"Now I am sure that I will be able to spend more time at the crease because the new-look body will now put comparatively lesser pressure on my troubled knees. At the same time, I can be quicker between the wickets and therefore, little chance of being run-out," Inzamam said, adding: "I would like to lose another five pounds by the time we take on India on March 1."
Inzi's scores in the six World Cup matches read 6,4,0,0,6,3. 19 runs for 23 pounds. In the all important match against India, he was out in the most familiar of ways - Run Out for 6.
By 2004, the lost kilos were back. And so were the runs. Inzi, who had given up vice-captaincy post the 2003 WC disaster and contemplated leaving the game, scored more than 900 runs in 2004 with an average in mid 40s.
In 2006, looking back at the World Cup, Inzi said, “I will never do that again. I worked harder than I ever did and lost — 17 kilograms. Can you believe it? It was too much. I didn’t score any runs without those 17 kilograms. And that’s when I got dropped from the Test team. It hurt me so much that I said I’m not willing to play again,” he added.
Some geniuses are not meant to be tampered with.
