In a development that made a lot of Kiwi fans happy today, speedster Lockie Ferguson was handed his Test debut at Perth against trans-Tasman rivals Australia in December 2019. The number he came out wearing was one that is considered unlucky by Australians - 87. But is it his most preferred number to wear? Possibly not. In fact, he wears a different number on his back when turning out for Auckland Aces or Kolkata Knight Riders.

New Zealand Cricket’s general shirt number policy is that players cannot wear a number previously worn by another player. So, that invariably limits any new player's choices. But Ferguson's case is slightly different. And rather interesting. The number he prefers hasn't been worn and will possibly won't be worn by any Kiwi player in the future.

That's because Ferguson wears 69 when appearing for other teams and the number, according to a New Zealand cricket spokesperson, can't be used for its double-meaning.

Ferguson's reason for his preference of 69 has got nothing to do with what pops up in your head when you hear the number. In fact, it's just astrology for a man born on the 13th of June. Still, the number, most famously worn by Lance Klusener, is out of bounds for him.

And that's why there will be no summer of 69 for Ferguson Down Under this time.
