Random Cricket Photos Post 13

Steve Harmison looks distraught in this photo. So does the debutant wicket-keeper Geraint Jones. And they didn't even know what was going to hit them.

This photo is clicked by the great West Indies cricket photographer Gordon Brooks and is from the 2004 Antigua Test.

Despite winning the Test series already, England had not been able to find solutions to their wicket-keeper troubles and decided to drop Chris Read and hand a debut to Geraint Jones.

Winning the toss, West Indies decided to bat and lost Darren Ganga in the 14th over. Out walked the next batsman. On his fourth and fifth ball with his score still on zero, he nicked a Harmison delivery to give Geraint Jones his first ever catch.

Well, sadly for Jones and Harmison, Darrell Hair didn't hear anything. And despite the frustration clearly visible on their faces in the photograph, they didn't have any option but to go back to their respective positions for the next delivery. To add insult to the injury, the batsman hit the next ball for a four.

Poor Jones would squat for more than 1000 deliveries in hope for another offering but it would never come. He ended his debut match without a dismissal against his name. The batsman who got a reprieve, meanwhile, went on to score the highest ever individual score in Test Cricket - a perfect 400 not out.

Looking back, Jones said in an interview, "I still give Brian Lara stick about not walking, but he'll never admit he got anywhere near that."
Lara clearly had a sway over Lady Fortuna!
