This stare-down began one fascinating passage of play when England Pakistan clashed in a 2001 Test. It started with Azhar Mahmood, who looked all at sea against Andrew Caddick and Co. getting hit on the helmet by a vicious bouncer. Caddick walked down the pitch, stood right in the middle and gave him this stare. No words exchanged.
What followed was a series of comical events. The tall English bowler went on to induce an edge of Mahmood and got him caught but Peter Willey signalled a no-ball that the English players realized long way into their celebration.
He once again thought he had his man when the ball lobbed off the handle of the bat to Alec Stewart behind as Mahmood tried to fend another bouncer awkwardly but the umpire didn't agree to his version of the story.
Plucky as all Pakistani cricketers, Mahmood replied to all this with a courageous pull that flew over Michael Vaughan at deep square leg for a four. Another nervous pull followed that Vaughan grassed at the same position adding to Caddick's misery. Caddick had the last laugh though as he got Razzaq caught at slip the next ball and one run later picked up Mahmood's wicket too.
Just the spicy battles that make cricket exciting!
