How much do you love your cricket? Well, if you say you're possibly the biggest cricket fan, then let me introduce you to a crazy bunch of people and after that you can ask yourself the question how big a fan of the game you are.
The Bramble Bank is a sandbank lying between Hampshire and the Isle of Wight that only rises above the tides for a bit at the spring and autumn equinoxes. The exposed bank doesn't last more than an hour before the tide returns. However, a bunch of cricket lovers in full cricketing whites reach the place immediately for a cricket match that only lasts as long as the waters remain off the bank.
For close to 60 years, these two yachting clubs - Royal Southern Yacht Club and the Island Sailing Club - have created a social event where cricket, because of the conditions, is thoroughly enjoyed even if briefly played. The winner is mostly pre-determined. The two clubs simply take it in turns to 'win' the match, regardless of play. The 'defeated' team has to host a big dinner for the two sides after the match is over, which happens when the tide rises again to submerge this little piece of land in the sea.
According to a CNN report, there have been years too when the water hasn't receded at all to show the land. But that hasn't deterred these lovers of the game who have played with water up to their ankles, and on some occasions, up to their knees as well.
So, how much do you love your cricket?
